The use of wearable tech is on the rise, and it seems like even schools are seeing the benefits…
Exercise is vital to children’s health and wellbeing, making physical education an important part of school. Here at Kids Smartwatches, we’re all about keeping children healthy, safe and happy, and that’s why this particular story caught our eye!
We all remember P.E. lessons, and we’re probably also all guilty of not putting 100% effort in from time to time – but that might all change if other schools follow the lead of one school in Pennsylvania, which has found a unique way to keep pupils’ energy up.
What was the effect of wearable tech in P.E. lessons?
Parker Middle School in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, is using the digital age to promote a healthier lifestyle for their pupils thanks to wearable tech. Children are wearing a piece of wearable tech during their P.E. lessons in order to track their exercise. And the school’s embrace of new technology has led to some promising results.
So what tech are the pupils wearing exactly? Well, the pupils were decked out with wrist bands with monitors which track their heart rate and how many calories they’ve burned. As the heart rates of the students increase, their band will turn from green to yellow to red – giving extra motivation to get a good workout.
One of the P.E. teachers at Parker Middle School told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that “the goal is to get every student’s heart rate in the red zone for at least 20 minutes of every gym class.” This is a great visual way for teachers to see whether students are receiving the exercise they so vitally need in order to promote a healthy lifestyle.
The monitors can also be synced to laptops, which allows pupils to track their progress and log their results so that they can see their own personal improvement through the data. And, most importantly of all, the students are responding well to the new regime.
Concerns about a lack of physical activity in children have been present for a long time, and parents and teachers alike are often worried about their children’s overall health. The proportion of obese children has been steadily increasing over the last decade – and that’s what makes stories like this so important.
Using wearable tech in P.E. lessons lets children learn about the importance of physical fitness early on, and gets them excited about getting active and boosting their heart rate during exercise. Over time, this could quite easily become the norm in P.E. lessons all over the world.
What else can wearable tech for children do?
