Everything you need to know to decide whether the FiLIP smartwatch is the right model for your child
The FiLIP smartwatch is a popular choice among parents looking for a way to feel more at ease about child safety and communication. Choosing a wearable tech model for your child is an important decision, as the right choice can make our children safer — and for parents there’s nothing more important. So is the FiLIP smartwatch the right option for you and your little ones?
The FiLIP model markets itself as a “wearable phone and locator for kids”, helping to keep families connected without resorting to buying your child a smartphone.
The GPS smartwatch comes with an accompanying app, compatible with both Android and iOS users, which parents can control to keep tabs on the smartwatch and their child. The app allows parents to access and control the tech, editing the settings to best fit current locations and situations.
Being marketed as a ‘wearable phone’, it’s no surprise that the main feature of the FiLIP smartwatch is voice calling. For many parents, the main advantage of a smartphone is the ability to call their child and check up on them, but online risks and stranger danger raise safety concerns. This makes voice calling a great feature of the FiLIP, giving you the advantages of a phone without the risks.
Through the app, parents can choose five phone numbers for their child to contact, compared to most other models which give you the option of only saving one or two. This gives the FiLIP user a greater choice of numbers, but not all parents will necessarily want their child using their smartwatch to chat regularly to extended family via their watch.
The other main feature of the FiLIP is its Smart Locator. The FiLIP blends GPS, GSM and Wi-Fi to help locate your child both indoors and outdoors. You can see their location at any time simply by opening the app, using similar technology to other models like the HereO.
If GPS and knowing your child’s location are the main things you want out of a smartwatch, then the FiLIP is a good model to consider as it uses some of the most accurate location information. You can even make separate profiles for each child in the app, and set up a maximum of five ‘Safezones’. Safezones are locations such as home or school which you deem safe. The app can notify you every time your child either enters or leaves a safezone.
The FiLIP also includes a Red Emergency Button, which acts as an SOS call if your child finds themselves in an emergency situation. The FiLIP can of course be used simply as a watch but it also has a one-way messaging service, almost like an old pager that can be used by parents to send reminders or instructions to their children. Children cannot reply to these messages however, so back-and-forth conversations are only possible via the voice calling feature.
FiLIP smartwatches have an appealing and sleek design with different colours to choose from. Unfortunately it doesn’t come with the kinds of games or entertainment functionality that brands like VTech have incorporated into their smartwatches, so young children may prefer other makes and models.
All in all, the FiLIP smartwatch is a great choice for parents concerned about child safety. It includes advanced GPS technology alongside other security features like its emergency button. It’s a particularly good choice for older children and pre-teens who are more concerned with great design than games and entertainment.
