This incredible story of a remarkable boy from Utah shows just how valuable wearable tech can be
Smartwatches for children are growing increasingly popular for lots of reasons, from their colourful designs to the variety of functions and entertainment factors they include. However, the one thing that makes wearable tech stand out is that it can help keep children safe, as shown by this story of a boy from Utah.
In an area of Utah called Saratoga Springs, an investigation was underway after a 9-year old boy said that he had escaped a kidnapping.
Whilst speaking to the police, the boy revealed new information, stating that he was walking to his friend’s house on a Tuesday evening when he was approached by a man. The man was driving an SUV, and according to the child, he drove up, grabbed the boy around the waist and pulled him into the back of a vehicle. The man was described as white with dark shoulder length hair and a goatee, driving a tan or gold Chevy Tahoe. He was also said to be carrying a gun.
The boy told KSL Utah, “He just picked me up and said, ‘You’re coming with me little boy’”.
Details such as these can be distressing to hear, but what happened next was nothing short of miraculous.
Just moments after being taken, the boy managed to unlock a door and escape the car.
He said of the experience, “[The man] was going pretty fast and I hung out the door and jumped out.”
Afterwards the boy ran as far as he could and hid behind a nearby supermarket. Luckily, he was wearing his smartwatch at the time: an LG Gizmogadget. This allowed him to immediately call his step-father.
Step-father Jimmy Green said, “By the time I found him he was frantic and scared,” but he was impressed that his son managed to remain calm: “I’m really impressed that he was able to function and keep his wits about him”.
Once Mr Green found his son, he took him straight to the police and reported the incident.
Wearable tech can help keep your children safe
Christopher Krause, technology expert at TechLifeCoach.com, discussed the benefits of wearable tech as a way of increasing child safety without jumping straight to smartphones. He said, “They’re actually a great option for parents that don’t want their kid to have internet access, games… Some of them don’t even have a face to the watch. They’re just the ability to call and the ability to send out GPS coordinates. So it’s a really good way to allow the kids to have that taste of technology, but not really open the floodgates of a smart phone, where they’re going to turn into screen watching zombies like a lot of the kids have turned into.”
Smartwatches are proving popular because of the benefits they bring to child safety. Not only are pre-programmed phone numbers and SOS call features commonplace, but many models also come equipped with GPS features. This allows parents to use their own smartphones to check up on their child’s whereabouts at any time. Some smartwatches also allow you to set safe zones at locations such as home and school. You then get a notification every time your child enters or exits a safe zone.
